The children at Garden Village Primary Academy are fully embracing the wonderful spring weather, especially when learning outdoors. A range of new outdoor resources have been purchased for Reception Maple and Mr Bill is also super busy building many new outdoor resources for the Year One outdoor area. We are also very grateful to the landscape gardeners who have worked tirelessly to plant many new trees and hedgerows around the site of GVPA. We cannot not wait to see them flourish!

Attendance continues to be something we are proud of - 96.64%. Thank you to our families and family friends who attended our celebration assembly last Friday.

Last week, Reception Maple watched an episode of Willow and the Wisp.
The children were fascinated by this cartoon which was originally screened in 1981! Evil Edna was the children's favourite character. The children amazed Miss Matthews with their responses to the challenge - What will Evil Edna try to turn you into with her magic spells?

This week, the children enjoyed reading, chanting and writing about the story of Jack and the Beanstalk. Using the vocabulary ginormous, the children drew the giant and the castle, and they invented new items for Jack to sell at the market.

Little Wandle - Phonics and Reading
In phonics, we continue to strengthen our Phase 3 sound recognition, blending skills and reading of tricky and longer words. We are all also trying really hard to form our letters correctly and form them fluently!

In Mathematics, we have continued to extend our knowledge and skills about number 9 and 10. Last week, we worked on developing our number fluency finding one more and one less to 10. On Thursday, Mr Hand and Mrs Burke joined our lesson when we were learning about number bonds to 10!
This week, we have also made our own number bonds to 9 and 10 dominoes.

Miss Matthews has introduced a new voting system for the end of the day story book. The book voting station has been a great application of mathematics skills for children, recognising that as they add another button, you have 1 more to the total. The children have been great at identifying and comparing the largest number for the winning book!
Miss Matthews has also put signs in the outdoor area to help us to count the correct amount of equipment when we tidy away!

Mrs Burke proudly awarded every child with a Spring Term 1 virtue certificate in the Family & Friends assembly last Friday.
This term, we are revisiting some virtues not only to remind us of their importance but to deepen our understanding of them. Over the last two weeks, we have deepened our knowledge about cleanliness (the importance of tidying away our resources) and fairness.

In art and design, we have completed our topic by exploring different painting techniques and making transient art collages. Luckily, Mrs Burke didn't know about the "flicking brush painting technique" until we had finished! We had so much fun doing it. Then, using various resources from Miss Matthews, we made collages which we could move and change.

Physical Development in the Outdoor Area
Reception Maple were delighted to receive some new outdoor learning resources. Thank you, Mr Bill for unpacking the new resources and assembling the new seating areas! We have especially loved making obstacle courses using the new wooden equipment and tyres.

Physical Education - Gymnastics
In PE, we have been recalled our previous gymnastics skills and moved across the mats in different ways. We have linked different movements together to make a sequence.
Miss Matthews and Mrs Guild set us a challenge to recall our gymnastic skills from the Autumn Term build on them during this unit of learning.

Expressive Arts and Design
In music this term, we are learning about 'musical stories'. After reading a story, Mrs Burke helps us to bring the story to life by retelling it using actions and movement. We have retold the story of the Teddy Bear's Picnic and Rapunzel.

Shrove Tuesday was celebrated in style for the first time at GVPA. Mrs Burke started the day with an assembly where the children learnt about Shrove Tuesday.
In the morning, a kind visitor made Reception Maple some playdough which they used to roll and make pancakes.
At lunchtime, it was time for pancake races!
In the afternoon, Miss Matthews and Mrs Guild took the children to the Special Practical Room to make and cook some pancakes. The children had great fun watching the adults trying to flip the pancakes!!
