Reception Maple and staff at Garden Village Primary Academy have had a wonderful start to the month of February.
The recruitment process for the Year One class teacher has started, which is very exciting. Link Governor visits have also happened for SEND and Early Years. Reception Maple welcomed all visitors so kindly; everyone commented on their beautiful manners. We are also delighted to have Mrs Jennings join the school, supporting the children in their learning. Thank you, Mrs Jennings - we are so lucky to have you come to learn with us.
Our attendance remains at 96.6%. Thank you once again for your continued support.
We look forward to welcoming the children back to school on Monday 24th February.

The Gingerbread Man text was used last week in Drawing Club. Chanting the repetitive phrases, Reception Maple thoroughly enjoyed using this text as the stimulus for the drawing and writing this week.
Using the new vocabulary word - 'soggy' - the children drew and labelled the seething of the river where the fox and Gingerbread Man cross. They were also challenged to design a new character because the old woman baked a new character, for example - Loaf Man! However, the best challenge was this: "Quick, the fox has run away with the loaf man! How can you catch the fox?"

When Mog’s garden disappears under an enormous white flappy thing, she is very unhappy, and does a bad thing – in Mr Thomas’s chair! This made Reception Maple laugh quite a lot. But when the cat show takes place inside the white flappy thing, it’s the perfect place for Mog to make her family proud.
The challenges this week were - Mog entered another competition. What does she win? Look at our designs. We also talked about what happened when Mog bounced onto the tent and flew up into the air! Where did she land?

Little Wandle - Phonics and Reading
This week, Miss Matthews completed the Spring Term 1 Phonic Assessments. Miss Matthews and Mrs Guild are thrilled with the progress of every child in their phoneme recognition, blending, segmenting and reading and writing fluency.
One of our incredible readers: blending and reading brilliantly!
We are super proud of your fluency when reading!
In Mathematics, we have continued to learn 'time'. Miss Matthews couldn't believe how good our knowledge about the days of the week was. Then we moved onto exploring and answering the following questions: What can you do in one minute? How long does it take you to ...? What is happening this evening/tomorrow/next week/at the weekend? What happened yesterday/last week/last month/last year?

Last Friday, it was Number Day! The children and staff dressed in number-themed clothes. This initiated so much discussion about the number names, who was wearing the biggest number and even the dates of the children's birthdays.
A great day was had by all, making number hats, playing number games and the best part of the day was making, baking and eating edible dominoes!

The themes for Character Education during the past two weeks were 'patience' and 'respect'. At four years old, patience for some children was a challenge. In PSHE, Mrs Burke set us a challenge to learn how to juggle using two scarves and to hula-hoop. For many, including the teachers, this was initially a challenge. But, learning from our mistakes, being determined and using the previously learnt virtue of perseverance, being patient enabled us to be successful!

At Garden Village, we are constantly seeing beautiful acts of kindness in the children's play. Here are a couple of examples:

In art and design, we have been exploring and learning how to collage. Inspired by the artist 'Megan Coyle', who creates landscape collages from photographs, the children worked collaboratively to create the most beautiful cherry blossom tree.

Knowledge & Understanding of the World

Using a range of containers of different sizes and made from different materials, Reception Maple have been busy investigating which containers would make the most suitable boat. Which containers float and which containers sink? Miss Matthews then further challenged us to investigate which other objects float and sink and what else could be used to make a boat?

In PE, Miss Matthews and Mrs Guild have continued to help us to develop our ball control skills. We are so good at dribbling a ball now. Ricky, who leads the after-school 'multi-sports club', has also commented on what good control we have too.
However, one of our favourite lessons was when we learnt to explore controlling a ball on the parachute. We had so much fun!

Guided by the children's interest in Valentines, Miss Matthews adapted the continuous provision today. Linking to our learning about 'length' in maths, Reception Maple measured a piece of ribbon which is the length of their arm span to make a hug. The children had great fun comparing who had the longest and shortest hug.

On the writing table, many children wrote their first valentine card. Then, with a little help from Pip, the children measured, rolled, cut and baked the most delicious love-heart gingerbread biscuits.
