Mathematics

At Garden Village Primary Academy, we believe that an outstanding mathematics curriculum provides the foundation for pupils to develop their critical understanding so that they can explore methodically, reason logically and make connections across all areas of the curriculum. ‘Maths mastery’ is therefore at the heart of our mathematics curriculum. To achieve this, Garden Village Primary Academy uses the White Rose Maths scheme of learning.

The White Rose Maths Curriculum is a research-driven teaching and learning curriculum that meets the goals of the National Curriculum. Through its mastery approach, White Rose Mathematics enables the children at Garden Village Primary Academy to:

  • Prioritise numbers: White Rose Maths has ‘number’ at its heart. Being confident in numbers is the first step to competency.
  • Develop depth before breadth: White Rose Maths cumulatively reinforces knowledge overtime.
  • Focus on fluency, reasoning and problem-solving: White Rose maths enables all children to acquire the skills they need to become competent mathematicians.
  • Collaborate with each other. As the children progress through the units, they can support and challenge each other as they learn.

Maths in the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) – Reception Year

In Reception, the White Rose Maths curriculum aims to develop a positive attitude for every child towards maths at an early age.  The Reception scheme of work breaks the year down into blocks of learning and sequential, logical steps. Using concrete and pictorial resources, the children at Garden Village Primary Academy learn in fun, purposeful, practical ways. In addition, books, games, rhymes, daily routines, and outdoor activities are used to nurture the enjoyment of maths. Our children explore mathematical concepts with curiosity and confidence.
